About AVIF

AVIF is a newer format based on the AV1 video codec that stores photos much smaller than JPG. Sites increasingly serve it, but older photo viewers, editors and upload forms cannot open it. Decoding needs a recent browser (Safari 16.4+); animated AVIF keeps only its first frame, and the JPG is usually 2–3× larger.
